“We’re Dormant”

Disclaimer:

Currently it’s rainy season at the Rainbow Crystal Land (RCL) and the paths are muddy. As a result of some recent land use issues this is not a good time for short-term visitors. However, if you’d like to come and spend at least a moon cycle with us to help put in place systems to ensure the land is protected, and that our community is a safe and healing space for our family, you are welcome. Otherwise it would be best to consider the RCL dormant at this time.

“Not all closed eyes are sleeping nor are all open eyes seeing.” l don’t know where that comes from but it’s a quote that was on the marker board at the Rainbow Crystal Land (RCL) kitchen for a while (in both English and Spanish). Just like the quote, we may be “dormant” but that doesn’t mean that things aren’t brewing at the RCL.

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Rio Hill and l’m a journalist for Jardin Salverde, reporting from the RCL on the other side of the creek. l have focalized three or four recent projects on the RCL, including a corn field, bodega roof, fire wood storage, and worm compost.

As you can see in the photo below, we have been working to organize ourselves to create more accountability and structure.

So why exactly are we dormant and creating all this structure?! Simple answer: We aren’t fulfilling the vision of a sustainable and harmonious community, which was the foundation behind the RCL’s creation. For a more detailed account keep reading!

ln April of 2016 this year, the RCL swelled up to over forty people. This is a phenomenon that has occurred each year after the yearly Costa Rican Rainbow Gathering, which has been near the beach town of Pavones for the past three years.

l must admit that after living at the RCL for over three months prior to The Gathering, with the average head count in that time being between four to six people, l was one of the instigators who made a big push to get the Rainbow Family to the land. At The Gathering l focalized a circle to discuss and answer questions about the RCL, l made at least three announcements at meal times (each time to over thirty people) promoting the RCL, and l pretty much told every person that l came across to come. l never imagined that it would result in what happened. We are on the other side of that swell now, and what a mighty wave struck us. l guess l use the wave analogy because it’s what best describes to me being hit with force and then a recession of materials.

Long story short, part of the virgin old growth forest was cut down and in its place appeared a dilapidated shack, buckets full of tools went missing from the toolshed, a backpack was snatched and later found laying on the ground on the way to town without a penny to be found. People’s camps were raided and things were taken from them. A glass cup was thrown at me. Somebody was doused in kerosine and chased with a lighter and another was chased with a knife, and l wish that all this was just a figment of my imagination. lt all really happened, and more.

That’s why we’re dormant.

What kind of rainbow folks are these?! l wouldn’t say that these acts represent the rainbow spirit at all, and the people responsible for them obviously don’t quite “get it” yet. Ironically, during the darkest of these times we were still gathering at least once a day and singing songs like “We are one in harmony” and “Amor amor amor” before eating meals.

lt would be preposterous to claim that these negative acts were all that happened during this period. lt may not sound like it but many of us arrived from Pavones with the Rainbow Spirit alive and thriving. As these acts increased, the Rainbow spirit, the family, and the harmony steadily diminished. A few of those who left were responsible land stewards who originally intended to stay at the land long-term.

Like it often happens, few ruin it for many. l truly believe that out of the forty plus people that showed up here only a handful maximum were responsible for the disharmonious actions. l’m not a big proponent of rules and structure (although that’s probably not what you’ll hear if you ask anyone living here right now), but how can we protect ourselves from this dilemma which from what l recently heard is happening yearly and each time more severely?

It’s been a couple of months since things were volatile and violent. Since then we’ve been riding the smoothing tide after the roller coaster of events that went by. We currently stand at merely three members since the last couple of days. For the passed couple of months, however, we were steadily at seven members. Understandably so, some of those members completely distanced themselves from the daily events because of what had happened. Their isolation from all the chaos was perhaps how they kept their sanity and maybe the fact that they didn’t come to the endless circles at the time was how they kept their things. It certainly seems to make sense since the solitary “rangers” made up a large percentage of who had remained. Even after things had calmed down some of those members seemed to really enjoy their solitary lifestyles, and the drive to get the social structures put in place was far from their ideal relaxing afternoon. It was a challenge reeling the rangers back into the community to put in place the new social structures, and some never did help. We’ve been asked to do this by the owner of the land Scottino and a concerned neighbor of ours, both of whom have suggested complete RCL community eviction.

Rangers or not, everyone who had remained was peaceful and pleasant for me to be around, and also most of them did help with the daily functions on occasion. The most dedicated ranger was a down to earth brother from the tiny country of Luxembourg. He’s also an awesome guitar player. He had expressed to me that at the time all he wanted to do was delve into his guitar realm and evolve in his playing. He had no interest in the consensuses but he said that he’d abide by them (as he did). He didn’t help with any of the daily functions at the time but he also didn’t consume any of the community resources (aside from some firewood that he collected and cut himself and water which is basically unlimited). Should we allow members like this to exist in the community? He certainly would have been welcome at a Rainbow Gathering. Ironically since then he has become one of the leading contributors to the community and is one of the remaining three members.

For me the beauty of Rainbow is the freedom to be, do, say, think, believe, and express myself however I want as long as I’m coming from a place of love, harmony, and justice. l also believe in keeping a steady balance between how much I give and how much I take. I believe that everyone has those same basic rights and responsibilities, so what is occurring now is quite the conundrum. On one hand we’re in risk of losing the land because of what happened, and on the other hand we’re potentially jeopardizing the freedom of the rainbow. Not doing anything isn’t an option. So here we’ve been for the passed couple of months:

The few of us who came to the “vision circles,” to create the new structure, spent several hours coming up with the new consensuses that we managed to grind out. Here they are:

1) Have a core group of community members who will make consensus for any and all major decisions including physical structures, removing living things, enforcing existing consensus (evicting consensus violators when necessary), and adding new members to the core group.

2) To meet the daily and long term needs of the community, we voluntarily take on roles as community members and ensure roles are sustained.

3) All new-comers must be given a “welcome home” tour within their first 24 hours on site by a core-group member.

4) Visitors are given 72 hours to read and agree to all consensuses, enter the star system, put their info in the family book, and select a role based on their skills, interests, and physical capacity. Short-term visitors can select the role of “floater” where they’re only asked to participate in the star system of essential community needs. This process is facilitated by a core-group member.

5) The ‘Star System’ is a listing of all the members of the community and a list of basic community needs (meal preparation, collecting and chopping a day’s supply of wood, preparing a batch of dry toilet mix, a full kitchen clean, and taking out the trash on Tuesdays before 10AM). A star is earned by completing one of these tasks. Once everyone has three stars, we will erase and start over.

6) A member of the community who chooses not to participate in the star system (free-ranger) looses their privilege to take community resources such as food, wood, and sleeping in communal spaces.

7) Severe violations warrant immediate removal from the community. These include: physical violence sexual assault, use of arms in a threatening way, stealing, cutting trees from protected zones, and vandalism. All other violations are at first addressed by the core group peacefully and compassionately. If the violation is repeated the person may be asked to leave by the core group.

During the last month things have been calm but not perfect. This week five people left the community and as I said before we are now down to three members. Our population hasn’t been this low since before the Rainbow Gathering. The remaining members are myself, the recent “free-ranger” Arnaud from Luxembourg, and Julio. Julio is a local Tico who has lived at the community since before my time and who had been friends with the community for the passed couple of years before then. Quick overview of the month: 1) Julio got injured and we carried him off the property on a stretcher. He spent most of the month tending his injury. We are happy that his health is back and grateful for his dedication in the kitchen lately. 2) Two dogs (Bebe & Boots) and one cat (Crystal) were left at the community by their owners and now we’ve got our hands full of animals. They’re so loveable and since they already suffer from abandonment issues throwing them on the street would be quite inhumane. We attempted to give the dogs away to a neighbor but they just keep coming back. This is where they grew up after all. 3) We will have corn! At least four or five of the plants are already producing fruit J. 4) Some people never got the memo that the ‘house-keeper’ role was vacant; We have a recurring problem of some people leaving us with all of their trash. 5) We have a couple of weeks to get the Rainbow Crystal Land ready for the permaculture workshop which will be occurring next door at the end of the month.

I’ve heard before that it’s not really “Rainbow” to be asking or expecting people to do any particular things. However, a true community could never exist if we can’t even protect ourselves, attain sustainability, provide our daily human needs, and live harmoniously. Most of the things we’re aiming for should already be “common sense” but over the course of the last three years the one thing that the RCL experiment has definitely proven to me is that having no structure breeds chaos. If the Rainbow movement didn’t stir up such an intense streak of hope for humanity in me as it has, there’s no way that I would still be here fighting for this “utopian dream,” as some people like to call it. According to Julio, who appears to me to be quite the doomsday predictor, we will be facing a grim and torrential rainy season this year. He claims that all the roofs will surely be blown off, the river will eat the road when the heavy rains come, our injured dog Boots is on her way to death because of her infected paw, and he may not survive many more months himself due to his ailments. I try to keep a brighter outlook. Do we face a lot of challenges? Certainly, but what great thing in this world ever came easily? After the rain comes the rainbow!

 

 

 

“Estamos Latente”

Ahora es la temporada lluviosa en la Tierra Arcoíris Cristal (TAC), y los caminos están lodosos. Por el resultado de unos problemas del uso de la tierra ahora no es un buen tiempo por visitantes que están de paso. Pero si usted quiere venir y pasar por lo menos un ciclo lunar para ayudar nos a poner sistemas que van a proteger la tierra, y asegurar que nuestra comunidad es un lugar seguro y sana para nuestra familia, usted está bienvenido. Sino es mejor considerar la TAC latente en este momento.

“No todos los ojos cerrados duermen, ni todos los ojos abiertos ven.” No sé de dónde viene este mensaje, pero por un tiempo estaba escrito en el lapicero de la cocina de la TAC (en Ingles y Español).  Igual a este mensaje, podemos estar “durmiendo” pero eso no significa que las cosas no están pasando en la TAC.

Hola me llamo Rio Hill y yo soy un periodista para Jardin Salverde, reportando de la TAC en el otro lado del arroyo. Me focalizado cuatro proyectos recientemente en la TAC, incluyendo sembrando una milpa, poñiendo un techo nuevo en la bodega, haciendo un espacio para secar leña, y una composta de lombrices.

Como usted puede ver en la foto abajo, nos otros estamos organizando nos para tener más responsabilidad y estructura en la comunidad.

¿Entonces porque estamos latente y creando toda esta estructura? Respuesta corta: No estamos cumpliendo la visión de una comunidad sostenible y armonioso, que fue la fundación atrás de la creación de la TAC. ¡Si quiere saber mas sigue leyendo!

En Abril de 2016, este ano, la TAC se hincho a más de 40 personas. Eso es un fenómeno que está siguiendo cada ano después del Encuentro anual de los Arcoíris en Costa Rica. Los últimos tres años el encuentro ha sido en la playa de Pavones, Costa Rica.

Tengo que admitir que después de vivir en la TAC por más de tres meses antes Del Encuentro, con a plantilla de gente en este tiempo entre 4-6 personas, yo fue una de las personas que empujo fuerte para que la familia arcoíris llegaría a la tierra. En El Encuentro yo focaliza un circulo para responder preguntas sobre la TAC, yo hico tres anuncios sobre la TAC durante los tiempos de comer (cada vez por más de 40 personas), y yo dije a case cada persona que relacione para llegar a la tierra. Yo nunca imaginei que las cosas que pasaron iban suceder. Estamos en el otro lado de la corriente ahora y que grande fue la ola que nos golpeó. Yo uso la analogía de la ola porque para mí es la mejor descripción de un golpe fuerte y una recesión de materiales.

En corto, parte del bosque virgen de árboles ancianas fue cortado y en su lugar apareció una cabaña desmoronada, cajas llenas de herramientas desaparecieron de la bodega, una mochila fue encontrada en el camino al pueblo sin un peso adentro. Acampamentos fueron robados. Alguien lanco un vaso de vidrio a mi cabeza. Una persona fue rociado en gasolina y perseguido con un encendedor, otro fue amachado y perseguido con un cuchillo, y me gustaría que todo eso fuera solo en mi imaginación. Todo realmente sucedió y más.

Por eso estamos latente

¿Qué tipo de gente Arcoíris son esos? Yo no creo que esos actos representan el espíritu Arcoíris por nada, y la gente responsable por ellos claramente no lo entiende todavía. Irónicamente, durante los tiempos más oscuros nos otros estaban juntando por lo menos una vez por día y cantando canciones como “Somos uno en Armonía” y “Amor amor amor” antes de comer. Sería un absurdo decir que solamente esas cosas negativas ocurrieron en ese tiempo. Talvez no lo soné, pero nos otros llegamos de Pavones con el espíritu Arcoíris vivo y fuerte. Con el tiempo los actos negativos alimentaron y el espíritu Arcoíris, la familia, y la armonía disminuido poco a poco. Algunos que se fueron eran cuidadores de la tierra que originalmente iban quedar por largo plazo.

Como pasa muchas veces, pocos ruinaron para la mayoría. Yo realmente creo que de las cuarenta o más personas que llegaron aquí solamente un puñado causaron la desarmonía. Yo no soy un gran proponente de reglas y estructura (a pesar de que eso no sería lo que la gente aquí ahora diría), pero como podemos proteger nos dé estés problemas que están pasando cada año y cada vez más severamente.

Hace un par de meses que las cosas estaban volátil y violento. Desde este tiempo estuvimos manejando la corriente que estuve se calmando después de la montaña Rusa que paso. En este momento hay solamente tres personas aquí desde la última semana. Sin embargo, por los últimos dos meses tuvimos más o menos siete personas siempre. Hace sentido que algunas de esas personas completamente se alejaron de la comunidad por toda la locera que sucedió. Su aislamiento de todo el caos es talvez como ellos manteneros su cordura, y talvez el fato que ellos no vinieron a todos los círculos sin fin es como ellos manteneros sus cosas. Ciertamente hace sentido porque de la gente que quedaron estés “vagabundos solitarios” hicieron un gran porcentaje de los que estaban aqui. Aposar de que las cosas ya habían calmado estés miembros aprendieron a gustar su solidaridad, y la motivación para ayudar a poner sistemas sociales era lejos de sus tardes ideales y relajantes. Fue un reto motivar los “vagabundos” para ayudar nos hacer la estructura nueva, y unos nunca ayudaron. El dueño de la tierra Scottino y un vecino querían ver algún cambio y ya sugirieron el desalojo completo de la TAC.

“Vagabundos” o no, me sentía bien con todos que estaban aquí los últimos meses, todos eran de la paz, y la mayoría ayudaban con los funcionamientos diarios de tiempo en tiempo. El ‘vagabundo’ más dedicado era un hermano buena onda del país chiquito de Luxembourg. El también es un guitarrista excepcional. El no tenía ningún deseo de ayudar con los consensos, pero dice que estaba listo a aceptar los consensos que hacemos (y si él les acepto). En este tiempo el no ayudaba con ninguna función de la comunidad, pero también no consumía ningún recurso comunal tampoco (solo madera que el encontraba y cortaba, y agua que es prácticamente ‘sin limito). ¿Deberemos aceptar gente así en la comunidad? Ciertamente el sería bienvenido en un Encuentro Arcoíris. Irónicamente desde ahora el es uno de los principales contribuyentes para la comunidad y es uno de los tres miembros que quedaron.

Para mí la cosa bonita del Arcoíris es la libertad para ser, hacer, pensar, crear, y expresar me de cualquier manera que quero si vengo de un lugar de amor, armonía, y justicia. Yo también creo en mantener un balancio entre lo que yo consumo y lo que hago. Yo creo que todos tenemos esos mismos derechos y responsabilidades, entonces lo que pasa ahora es realmente una adivinanza. Por un lado, estamos en riesgo de perder la tierra por lo que sucedió y por el otro estamos poñiendo la libertad del arcoíris en riesgo. No hacer nada no es una opción entonces aquí estuvimos por estés últimos par de meses:

Los pocos de nosotros que vinieron a los “Círculos de Visiones,” para crear la estructura nueva, pasamos muchas horas en crear los nuevos consensos que hicimos. Aquí están:

• Tener un grupo núcleo de miembros de la comunidad que van hacer consensos para cualquiera y todas las decisiones importantes, incluyendo estructuras físicas, sacando cosas vivas, enfocando los consensos que existen (sacando violadores de consensos cuando necesario), y agregando gente nueva al grupo ‘núcleo.’
• Para cumplir las necesidades diarias y de largo plazo de la comunidad, nos otros asumimos papeles como miembros de la comunidad y aseguramos que los papeles son sostenidos.
• Todos los recién llegados necesitan un tour “Bienvenidos a La Casa” durante sus primeros 24 horas en el sitio por un miembro núcleo
• Visitantes tienen 72 horas para leer y estar de acuerdo con todos los consensos, entrar en el “Sistema de estrellas,” poner su información en el libro de la familia, y escoger un papel basado en sus habilidades, intereses, y capacidad física. Visitantes de término corto pueden escoger el papel de “flotador” donde solamente pedimos que ellos participan en el “sistema de estrellas” de necesidades esenciales de la comunidad. Este proceso es facilitado por un miembro núcleo.
• El “Sistema de Estrellas” es una lista de todos los miembros de la comunidad y una lista de todas las necesidades básicas de la comunidad (preparación de comidas, colectando y cortando suficiente leña para un dia, preparando la mezcla para el baño seco, una limpieza completa de la cocina, y sacando la basura los martes antes de las 10AM). Una estrella es ganado por cumplir uno de estos trabajos. Cuando todos los miembros tienen tres (3) estrellas borramos y empezamos de nuevo.
• Un miembro de la comunidad que escoge no participar el el Sistema de Estrellas (“vagabundo libre”) pierde su privilegio de tomar recursos comunitarios como comida, madera, y el derecho de dormir en las áreas comunales.
• Violaciones graves asegura eliminación inmediata de la comunidad. Esos incluyen: violencia física, asalto sexual, uso de armas para ameacar, robando, cortando arboles de zonas protegidas, y el vandalismo. Todas las otras violaciones son primero cuidadas por el grupo núcleo con paz y compasión. Si la violación es repetida el grupo núcleo puede pedir que la persona se vaya.

Durante este último mes las cosas estuvieron calmas, pero no perfectas.  Semana pasada cinco personas se fueron de la comunidad y como yo dice antes ahora somos apenas tres miembros. Nuestra población nunca estuve tan bajo desde antes del Encuentro Arcoíris. Los miembros que quedan son yo, el recen “vagabundo libre” Arnaud de Luxembourg, y Julio. Julio es un Tico de la zona quien hay vivido en la comunidad desde antes de mi tiempo, y quien era amigo de la comunidad por años antes de eso. Una visión de conjunto rápido del último mes: 1) Julio lastimo su espalda y tuvimos que llevar lo el en una camilla con un paramédico de la Cruz Roja para fuera de la propiedad. El paso la mayoría del mes cuidando su daño. Estamos felices que su salud ya mejoro y con gratitud por su ayuda en la cocina últimamente. 2)  Dos peros (Boots y Bebe) y un gato (Cristal) fueron dejados por sus dueños y ahora tenemos nuestras manos llenas de animales. Ellos son tan amables y como ellos ya sufren de problemas de abandono botando ellos en la calle sería bastante inhumano. Intentamos regalar los peros a una vecina, pero ellos siempre regresan. Aposar de todo ellos crecieron aquí. 3) Vamos a tener maíz! Por lo menos cuatro o cinco plantas ya están produciendo frutos J. 4) Unas personas nunca se fijaron que el papel ‘Ama de La Casa’ estaba vacante. Tenemos un problema periódico de personas dejando nos con toda su basura. 5) Tenemos un par de semanas para alistar la Tierra Arcoíris Cristal para el taller de permacultura que va ocurrir en el final del mes.

Yo ya escuché antes que no es la “filosofía Arcoíris” preguntar o esperar que la gente hace cualquier cosa en particular. Sin embargo, una comunidad real nunca podría existir si nosotros no podemos ni proteger nos, alcanzar sostenibilidad, proporcionar nuestras necesidades humanas básicas, y vivir armoniosamente. La mayoría de las cosas que nosotros estamos apuntando hacia ya deberían ser el “sentido común” pero si hay una cosa que el experimento TAC me ha enseñado los últimos tres años es que no estructura crea caos. Si el movimiento Arcoíris no despertó un rayo de esperanza para la humanidad tan intenso en mí, yo nunca estaría aquí todavía luchando por este “sueño utópico,” como unos les gusta decir. Según a Julio, quien parece a mí a ser un predictor de malas cosas, vamos a encarar un severo y torrencial época de lluvia. Él dice que todos los techos van a ciertamente caer, el rio vas a crecer y comer la calle cuando las lluvias fuertes llegan, nuestra perra lastimada, Boots, ciertamente vas a morir por su pata infectada, y el mismo probablemente no vas a sobrevivir muchos más meses por sus enfermedades. Yo intento a tener un panorama más brillante. ¿Tenemos muchos desafíos? Ciertamente, ¿pero cuál gran cosa en este mundo ya vino fácilmente? Despues de la lluvía viene el arcoiris!
