Happy third anniversary Rainbow Crystal Land (RCL) Community. We are now by far and away the longest-lived Rainbow Gathering to have gone down in history (or is it “our-story?”). This is a letter to everyone associated or involved with the RCL Community because it addresses something very concerning about our long-term existence and perpetuity. First of all, is this really happening? Are we really accomplishing what we set out for? Have we really established a “permanent” Rainbow Gathering, or are we merely aspiring for impossible goals and dreams that have no merit and are inadvertently causing more destruction than we perceive? My goal is to inspire you to help me answer these questions from a source of compassion for our environment and those of us that live with it.

 

Let me begin with a bit of background on who I am and how I came to know RCL. I have lived on and off at Jardin Salverde for over six years since June 2005, over eleven years ago. That first year in 2005, I began collaborating with some scientists and researchers from the University of California Santa Cruz to help me out with several reforestation projects, which is really the heart of what Jardin Salverde is all about. In fact, earlier this year, there was another article published in the Journal of Applied Vegetation Science using data collected from some of Jardin Salverde’s reforestation plots. Anyway, immediately after the inauguration of RCL on site at Jardin Salverde in April 2013, I noticed a significant change in the way the land became managed. It took on a life of its own and gave me a feeling of freedom to leave the land in the hands of RCL. The initial developments taking place were very exciting to me. Aquaculture ponds, cob houses, earthen ovens, and beautiful art and music sprung up spontaneously and colonized the land faster than the invasive weeds I was chopping by machete at Salverdelandia.

 

However, on my last visit from January through March of 2016, I perceived a concerning level of environmental and sociological degeneration. Since late 2015, I have become overwhelmed in comments from others members of the RCL Community that have used the terms “drainbows,” “lack of energy,” “excess transience,” “thievery,” “police-state,” and “illegal logging” to describe current affairs. At this point, I think it is safe to say we can all agree that the RCL community faces challenges of cohesion with its premise of permanence.

 

In 2016 I have spent hundreds of hours both online and on site speaking with neighbors, local people, and those living on site to address these challenges. What I have found is a need for cohesion, structure, and integrity to keep the community alive and thriving. There is a list of consensuses in a small book hidden in the depths of our on-site library that someone had crossed out with a large “X” as if to signify the consensuses had been nullified. Several months ago I posted a photo of this page on the Rainbow Crystal Land Facebook group with a comment that asked who made the “X” and for what reason. Due to a lack of response and with the help of Parker East, Rio Hill, Asha, and Rachel, we recorded the information from this book as well as a sign in front of the cob house and four new consensuses into a Google Spreadsheet that may be viewed by anyone in the Jardin Salverde Google Docs folder.

 

Editing access will be approved by the new Jardin Salverde staff, consisting of Rio Hill, Parker East, and I. These people are not any more powerful in community decision making than anyone else in the community but are employed by me as scribes and record keepers. The Rainbow Crystal Land Records document also includes new on-site-approved consensuses along with current on-site discussion topics, roles, ethics, and principles. I would have liked to have seen these records spontaneously appearing on the rainbowcrystalland.org website but it appears that website just does not yet have the capabilities of Google Docs. Other documents in the folder include photos, the permaculture design project I am working on, letters from neighbors, and reforestation projects and scientific papers written about current research going on at Jardin Salverde.

I believe that good record keeping and information access are not the only ways to regenerate the Costa Rican RCL. Vetting the admission process by filtering out transient, illegal, mischievous, and untrustworthy behavior for the values described in our Rainbow Crystal Land Records will maximize the concentration of quality “full-power brothers and sisters” on site and get more permanent projects off the ground like long term sustainable buildings and apiculture. Without such a quality core group, it will be challenging to collaborate with innovative projects such as the “Rise” project, Permaculture Design Courses, and an academic botanical research center at Jardin Salverde.

 

RCL still remains conceptual in my mind. It has not quite “crystalized” yet and still remains quite paradoxical to me. My experience attending over a dozen traditional Rainbow Gatherings in the United States brings strong nomadic memories to mind, yet the year or two I have spent on site at the Costa Rican RCL has shown me that the single most detrimental factor to RCL has been that very same nomadic behavior. Therefore, perhaps the most significant way RCL can truly “crystallize” is if careless transient vagabonds get replaced with genuine and compassionate land stewards. This change cannot be made alone, nor can it even be done with the help of a couple employees. It takes all of us together to unite and act as a real community. I am at a crossroads and need to make a choice soon between sticking with RCL and just dropping it all together. All of the Costa Rican RCL’s neighbors have been authorized to perform an evacuation sweep to evict anyone on site at the Costa Rican RCL whenever they want, so this decision goes beyond myself and to the broader, local, and truly permanent community.

Feliz tercer aniversario Tierra Cristal Arcoiris (TCA) Comunidad. Ahora estamos, por lejos, la más larga vida de Rainbow que han pasado a la historia (o es “nuestra-historia?”). Esta es una carta a todas las personas relacionadas o involucradas con la Comunidad TCA porque se dirige a algo muy relativo sobre nuestra existencia y perennidad a largo plazo. En primer lugar, se esta sucediendo realmente? ¿Realmente estamos logrando lo que nos propusimos para? ¿Realmente hemos establecido un “permanente” de Rainbow, o se trata más que aspiran a metas imposibles y sueños que no tienen mérito y están causando inadvertidamente más destrucción que percibimos? Mi objetivo es inspirar a que me ayude a responder a estas preguntas de una fuente de compasión por nuestro medio ambiente y los que viven con él.

Permítanme comenzar con un poco de antecedentes sobre quién soy y cómo llegué a conocer RCL. Ese primer año en 2005 , que comenzó a colaborar con algunos científicos e investigadores de la Universidad de California en Santa Cruz para que me ayude con varios proyectos de reforestación , que es realmente el corazón de lo Jardin Salverde se trata. Debido a la falta de respuesta y con la ayuda de Parker Medio, Río Hill, Asha, y Rachel, se registró la información de este libro, así como un letrero en frente de la casa de la mazorca y cuatro nuevos consensos en una hoja de cálculo de Google que puedan ser visto por cualquier persona en la carpeta Jardin Salverde Google Docs.

Acceso a la edición será aprobado por el nuevo personal Jardin Salverde, que consiste en la colina de Río, Parker Medio, e I. Estas personas no son más poderosos en la toma de decisiones de la comunidad que cualquier otro en la comunidad, pero son empleados por mí como escribas y registro guardianes. El documento del arco iris de cristal Registros de la tierra también incluye nuevos, además de los consensos actuales aprobados en el lugar de temas de discusión, los roles, la ética y los principios sobre el terreno. Creo que el mantenimiento de un buen registro y acceso a la información no son las únicas maneras de regenerar la Costa Rica TCA . Proceder a la instrucción del proceso de admisión mediante la filtración de los transitorios, ilegal, dañoso, y el comportamiento de poca confianza para los valores descritos en nuestro arco iris de cristal Catastro maximizará la concentración de calidad “hermanos de alta potencia y hermanas” en la página web y conseguir proyectos más permanentes de la tierra al igual que los edificios sostenibles a largo plazo y la apicultura. Sin un grupo tan fundamentales y de calidad, será un reto para colaborar con proyectos innovadores como el proyecto “Rise”, Cursos de Diseño de Permacultura, y un centro de investigación académica y botánico Jardin Salverde.

RCL conceptual aún permanece en mi mente. No se quite “cristalizado” y sin embargo sigue siendo bastante paradójica para mí. Mi experiencia de asistir a más de una docena tradicional Rainbow reuniones en los Estados Unidos trae fuertes recuerdos nómadas a la mente, sin embargo, el uno o dos años que han pasado en el lugar y el TCA Costa Rica me ha demostrado que el factor más perjudicial sola a TCA ha sido que muy mismo comportamiento nómada. Por lo tanto, tal vez la forma más significativa RCL puede verdaderamente “cristalizar” es transitorio si por descuido vagabundos son reemplazados con los administradores de tierras auténticos y personales. Este cambio no se puede realizar por sí solo, ni puede incluso hacerse con la ayuda de un par de empleados. Se necesita de todos nosotros juntos para unirse y actuar como una verdadera comunidad. Estoy en una encrucijada y la necesidad de hacer una elección entre la pervivencia de TCA pronto y simplemente dejar caer todo junto. Todos los vecinos de Costa Rica de TCA han sido autorizadas para realizar un barrido de evacuación para desalojar a cualquier persona en el lugar y la RCL de Costa Rica siempre que lo deseen, por lo que esta decisión va más allá de mí mismo y al más amplio, local, comunitario y verdaderamente permanente.
