Hi blog readers,

The title of this blog is “Pulled in Two Directions,” because I am being pulled back to Jardin Salverde on one hand and on the other I am being pulled to work on my Masters program at The University of Washington (UW). I have been frequently asked lately when I will be returning to Jardin Salverde, so this blog will attempt to answer that question as clearly as possible.

First and foremost, I want to say that I love Jardin Salverde like it is my baby. I have no children unless you consider all the plants, animals, and communities I have cared for at Jardin Salverde to be my children. However, as many of you know by now, I am now in the Peace Corps Masters International (PCMI) program at the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) at The UW, which may require me to serve 27 months abroad and take a full year of courses on campus. I was fortunate enough to be one of only two people selected into PCMI at SEFS this year. Best of all, the connections and resources I am accumulating during my studies here are giving me the skills and tools to open an academic program at Jardin Salverde where students could come and study the amazing diversity of plants growing on site, build ecological structures, enhance awareness, strengthen local solidarity, and experience an oasis of pristine wilderness in a surrounding desert of deforested farmland. This year also happens to be the final year PCMI will be offered after nearly 30 years of operation, so it would be quite the tragedy to relinquish this amazing opportunity.

Nearly equally as tragic, appears to be the current state of affairs at Jardin Salverde. Several neighbors have reported to me that a large portion of old growth forest has been chopped down illegally and without permission by someone who’s name will not be disclosed at this moment. The photo below depicts the west side of the property at the top of the hill across from Humberto’s property.

Several weeks prior to this blog posting, the area on the right was dense old growth forest. It has obviously been chopped down and a dilapidated shack has been erected in place of it. One correspondent from the Rainbow Crystal Land community described the damage was at least 10m². The correspondent confronted the suspect who does not deny cutting the forest but has only responded with violence and continued abuse, to both the ecology and community on-site. Much of the peaceful folks have left out of fear of this man and a group of other violent adolescents that support him. From here in the US, I have made attempts to call the police and neighbors to resolve the situation, but any effectiveness requires someone on-site. My passport was physically damaged and needs to be replaced before I can return legally. The Ministry of Environment and Energy regulates forestry practices in Costa Rica and does not even require a permit to be signed by me to enter private properties like Jardin Salverde to intervene and reclaim titles due to ecological malpractice.  It is in serious jeopardy of being taken away from Rainbow Crystal Land and me.

It is a desperate state of affairs and I hope any of you reading this can help. One way is to unite and educate the people on-site. I have posted a paid position under the employment tab to do just this. If you are interested in being the property manager at Jardin Salverde, please apply for the position. So when will I be back? I cannot say for sure right now. Even if I expedite the renewal of my passport, it will not be available for another three weeks, which is well into my first quarter of study at the UW. It does look like I will have a break between Summer and Fall quarters from August 20th to September 26th, so if I cannot make it down sooner, I am planning a trip down there at that time.

El título de este blog está “tirado en dos direcciones,” porque estoy siendo arrastrado de nuevo a Jardin Salverde por un lado y por el otro estoy siendo arrastrado a trabajar en mi programa de Maestría en la Universidad de Washington (UW). Se me ha preguntado con frecuencia últimamente cuando me voy a volver a Jardin Salverde, por lo que este blog a intentar responder a esta pregunta con la mayor claridad posible.

En primer lugar, quiero decir que amo Jardin Salverde como es mi bebé. No tengo hijos a menos que considere todas las plantas, animales y comunidades que he atendido en Jardin Salverde a ser mis hijos. Sin embargo, como muchos de ustedes saben por ahora, ahora estoy en el programa del Cuerpo de Paz Masters Internacional (PCMI) en la Facultad de Ciencias Ambientales y Forestales (SEFS) en la UW, lo que me puede requerir para servir 27 meses en el extranjero y tomar una año completo de cursos en el campus. Yo tuve la suerte de ser uno de los únicos dos personas seleccionadas en PCMI en SEFS este año. Lo mejor de todo, las conexiones y los recursos estoy acumulando durante mis estudios aquí me están dando las habilidades y herramientas para abrir un programa académico en el Jardín Salverde donde los estudiantes podrían venir a estudiar la increíble diversidad de plantas que crecen en el lugar, construir estructuras ecológicas, mejoran conciencia, fortalecer la solidaridad local, y la experiencia de un oasis de naturaleza virgen en un desierto que rodea las tierras de cultivo deforestada. Este año también pasa a ser el último año PCMI se ofrecerá después de casi 30 años de funcionamiento, por lo que sería bastante la tragedia a renunciar a esta increíble oportunidad.

Casi igual de trágico, que parece ser el actual estado de cosas en el Jardín Salverde. Varios vecinos me han informado de que una gran parte de los bosques antiguos ha sido talados ilegalmente y sin el permiso de alguien cuyo nombre no será compartida en este momento. La foto de abajo muestra el lado oeste de la propiedad en la cima de la colina al otro lado de la propiedad de Humberto.

Varias semanas antes de esta entrada de blog, el área de la derecha era denso bosque primario. Es, evidentemente, ha sido talado y la deteriorada choza se ha erigido en el lugar de ella. Un corresponsal de la comunidad Arco Iris Cristal Tierra describe el daño era al menos 10m2. El corresponsal enfrentó al sospechoso que no niega cortar el bosque, pero sólo ha respondido con la violencia y el abuso continuo, tanto a la ecología y de la comunidad en el sitio. Gran parte de la gente pacíficos han dejado por miedo a este hombre y un grupo de otros adolescentes violentos que lo apoyan. De aquí en los EE.UU., he hecho intentos de llamar a la policía y los vecinos para resolver la situación, pero ninguna eficacia requiere a alguien en el lugar. Mi pasaporte fue físicamente dañado y necesita ser reemplazado antes de que pueda regresar legalmente. El Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Energía regula las prácticas forestales en Costa Rica y ni siquiera requiere un permiso para ser firmada por mí para entrar en propiedades privadas como Jardin Salverde para intervenir y recuperar títulos debido a la mala práctica ecológica. Que se encuentra en grave peligro de ser quitada del arco iris cristalino de la tierra y yo.

Es un estado de desesperación de los asuntos y espero que cualquiera de los que están leyendo esto puede ayudar. Una forma es unir y educar a las personas en el lugar. He publicado una posición pagada bajo la etiqueta de empleo para hacer precisamente esto. Si usted está interesado en ser el administrador de la propiedad en el Jardín Salverde, por favor solicitar la posición. Así que cuando voy a volver? No puedo decir con certeza en este momento . Incluso si agilizar la renovación de mi pasaporte , que no estará disponible hasta dentro de tres semanas, que es así en mi primer trimestre de estudio en la Universidad de Washington. Todo tiene un aspecto que voy a tener un descanso entre verano y otoño cuartas partes del 20 de agosto a la 26 de septiembre por lo que si no puedo hacerlo hacia abajo antes, estoy planeando un viaje allí en ese momento .
